And even the most serious story can be made more memorable by injecting a moment of levity. Learn how the pros use humor to connect with audiences and incorporate playful elements into the shared experience of story. There will be time for audience questions.

FB_ShareImage_OpenMic2.jpg

Story Arts of Minnesota created a virtual space for storytelling when we launched our monthly Story Circle last April. From the outset, we planned to continue the monthly open mics until April 2121, when our annual StoryFest will take place.

The Story Circles are open to everyone via Zoom teleconferencing.  We’ve even had people log in from Australia and Canada! Register in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/o/story-arts-of-minnesota-17294067957. After registering, you'll receive an email message with the Zoom link.

Bring your favorite seven-minute tale and your listening ears. All stories are welcome, including traditional tales as well as original true stories.  (Spooky stories are especially welcome at the October 27 program!) Both experienced and new storytellers are welcome.  We ask that you offer content warnings if the story might be challenging, and that you let others know if they can retell it. If you'd like to reserve a spot to tell, please email us at storyartsmn@gmail.com.

Don't have a story to share?  We invite you to watch and listen.

The National Storytelling Network is hosting a weekend-long virtual Halloween party! Packages will get your entire household into every performance, the workshop, the slam, and special events like the costume contest, swap, and social times! Everyone knows a storyteller makes Halloween better – Imagine what will happen when we join together!

This is from the NSN website: “We know that many people are struggling financially right now. NSN wants to support all storytellers and story listeners, regardless of current financial situation. Tellabration North Central thumbnail-2020.jpg

NSN North Central Region Tellabration (TM) Open House

Sunday, November 15, 1-9pm EST or noon-8pm  CST

Eight states make up the North Central Region of the National Storytelling Network and will be participating in the North Central Regional Tellabration this year. By random draw, Minnesota has landed the 3:00-4:00 Central or 4:00 to 5:00 pm Eastern slot.

The planners are looking for 5 tellers from Minnesota, who each will have 8 minutes to share a story with friends, family, and colleagues across the North Central Region between 3:00 and 4:00 pm Central time on Sunday, November 15. (Yes, the organizers state, they’re serious about the time limit).  Places on the line-up will be strictly first come first served.  They are producing this as a voluntary community sharing event – no one will be paid. Are you not an NSN member? That’s OK – if there are slots available, they want to celebrate Minnesota stories and storytellers with everyone! If you’d like to tell, please send an email to Jennifer.Pahl.Otto@gmail.com

The sooner you sign up, the more likely it is that you get one of these sought-after slots! The deadline to sign up is November 1, but sign-ups will close as soon as they get enough tellers.

This will be a free Zoom event with a maximum of 100 people at any one time.  Audience members and tellers can come and go as long as there is room.  Everyone participating, including tellers, MUST register here: http://tiny.cc/NCRegionTellabration

While this is a free event, those who attend are asked to please make a voluntary donation to the National Storytelling Network.  Did you know that Tellabration (TM) was originally designed as a fundraiser for the NSN? You can donate here: https://storynet.org/donate/

Have you never joined NSN, or has your membership lapsed? Check out NSN’s website, see what’s going on, think about joining or renewing: https://storynet.org/ (NOTE: paid-up members of Story Arts of Minnesota are entitled to a 10% discount on NSN dues.)

Workshop, October 13: Crafting Challenging Story Scenes, with Gregory Pickett and Laura Packer

September 21, 2020 Sue Searing
Pickett-Packer workshop-4.jpg

Learn how to keep the teller and the audience safe, engaged, and present. Story Arts’ monthly online workshop series continues in October with a session co-led by SAM members Gregory Pickett and Laura Packer.

Stories of lived challenges are powerful for both the teller and the audience, but need to be crafted carefully so the audience never worries about the teller and stops listening to the story. Gregory and Laura both share stories of challenging experiences crafted for performance, and both always keep the audience in mind. This workshop will help you develop a challenging scene from a story so that it is visceral and well-told at the same time as it keeps the audience safe and focused.

This event is open to everyone via Zoom teleconferencing.  After registering, you'll receive an email message with the Zoom link.

Registration is free, although donations are appreciated to support SAM's virtual programming. The suggested donation is $10.

Using the Story Mountain Structure to Craft Any Story

May 16, 2020 Sue Searing
StoryMountainWorkshop-Knutson.png

Please join us for SAM’s second online workshop. We will be offering workshops through Zoom every month on the second Tuesday evening.

School children learn about the story mountain for analyzing and writing stories; it is a great model for adult tellers, too, and almost any written or oral story can be plotted along the mountain. Learn how to harness the power of this simple structure when writing your own stories, from personal narratives to folktales - and everything in between! Professional Storyteller and Teaching Artist Katie Knutson has been using this technique to help students writing original fables, pourquoi stories, and fractured fairy tales. She has recently started using it to write her own personal and historical pieces, and loves the results!

This FREE event is open to everyone via Zoom teleconferencing.  After registering, you'll receive an email message with the Zoom link.

SAM gets MRAC grant for StoryFest, adds online programs

April 27, 2020 Sue Searing
MRAC_logo_Black.jpg

Shortly after cancelling StoryFest 2020, originally scheduled on May 2 at Normandale Community College, Story Arts received word that our application for Arts Project Support funding was approved by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council.   We are very grateful to MRAC for the grant, which will enable us to pay workshop presenters and featured storytellers and meet other expenses associated with an all-day public event.  We’re even more grateful that MRAC will allow us to hold and apply the funds to StoryFest 2021.

While many of the workshop leaders, storytellers, and session hosts have already re-committed to being part of the festival a year from now, we don’t need to wait that long to share the community spirit of StoryFest.  With MRAC’s permission, SAM is tapping into the grant now to create opportunities for you to share stories, sharpen storytelling skills, and connect with other story lovers on Zoom.

Starting on May 12, you can join us each month on the second Tuesday evening for an online workshop.  Participation is free, but you must register.  The first workshop will be led by renowned storyteller, story coach, author, and SAM board member Laura Packer.  Laura will explore aspects of self care for storytellers during social distancing.   Please register in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/self-care-for-storytellers-during-social-distancing-workshop-tickets-103639257810.

We’re on the lookout for more workshop topics and presenters.  If you have an idea for a workshop, please drop us a line at storyartsmn@gmail.com.

In addition, SAM has already begun hosting monthly Story Circles – virtual open mics where anyone can tell a seven-minute story.  No judging, no feedback, just stories.  Any kind of story, true or fictional, traditional or contemporary, is welcome.   If you don’t have a story to share right now, please come to listen.  Stories need audiences!  The Story Circles will occur on the fourth Tuesday evening of every month.  They’re free, but pre-registration is required.  To register for the next Story Circle – Tuesday, April 28, 7pm – please go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sam-online-story-circle-tickets-103089389138.

For information about upcoming virtual programs, please follow “Story Arts of Minnesota” on Facebook or watch this website.  Until we can meet again in person, we look forward to seeing you on the screen.
